Marie (Milligan) DeSantis, 68
Marie Therese DeSantis, age 68, passed away on March 26th 2018 at Einstein Hospital in the Bronx after a three year battle with stomach cancer. Marie was born on July 23rd 1949, in Queens, New York and was the daughter of Frank and Jeanette Milligan.
One of six children, Marie was the second youngest and given the nickname “Spooky” from her father from all her attempts to jump out and startle him when he would return home. The name “Spooky” would follow Marie throughout her life, where some of her nieces and nephews would call her “Aunt Spooky.” No matter when it was Marie would be ready to visit family or plan for a gathering to share a good laugh or join-in on a song as singing was always the staple of any Milligan get together.
Growing up her loving brothers and sisters would enjoy their time at far Rockaway beach where Marie’s love of the ocean would be nurtured. After attending Our Lady of Perpetual Help elementary school Marie went to Stella Morris High School in Rockaway where she would look out of the windows to the ocean instead of paying attention to the curriculum given by the Nuns.
In 1969 Marie worked for Merrill Lynch and it was there she met the love of her life, Benedict DeSantis. The two married in 1972 and would form a bond that would be a shining example to their three children, Marie, Benedict, and Marguerite. For their honeymoon, Ben and Marie went aboard the Rotterdam on what would be their first of twenty-seven cruises throughout their marriage. Although she held a fear of flying, Marie was able to travel to Alaska, Hawaii, the Panama Canal, and all places between the Atlantic and Pacific with her husband by her side.
In 1975 Marie became a mother and from that year on she would take her young children on countless vacations along the east coast in the family station wagon. Her love of travel and enjoyment of visiting Disney World would rub off on her children as they grew and went off on trips of their own. In August 2017 Marie was able to enjoy one more family vacation aboard the Disney Dream as a proud Mother, Mother in-law, and grandmother.
Marie was diagnosed with stage-4 stomach cancer in the summer of 2016 but through all the clinical visits for her chemotherapy, the out-patient portable pump that she needed to carry for three days, and all the requirements in between, she continued to give time to all of her clients during tax-preparation season being a dedicated forty-year employee of H&R Block.
Marie is survived by her husband Ben, her daughters Marie, Marguerite, her son Ben, her daughter-in-law Laura, son-in-law Adam, her granddaughter Alissa (5yr), her grandsons Adam Jr. (7yr), Mark and Matthew (6 months), her sisters, Jeannette, Margaret, Kathy, her brothers, John and Frank, and all of her nieces and nephews whom she all loved as her own children.
Visitation will be held at McNulty Funeral Home, Inc. in the Bronx on Friday, March 30th and Saturday, March 31st from 2:00 to 5:00pm and 7:00 to 9:00pm. The address is 3006 Middletown Road, Bronx, New York 10461.
Funeral Service is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Monday April 2nd at St. Gregory The Great in Harrison, New York with longtime friend of Marie, Father Richard Guarnieri. The address is 215 Halstead Ave, Harrison, NY 10528.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation, in memory of Marie DeSantis for her grandson Mark. “Nana” was concerned for her grandson everyday when he started his battle at 6 weeks old in December but was beyond happy when she learned two weeks ago that his treatment was over and his cancer was in remission.
