Russell Anthony Joyner

Of North Andover, Massachusetts, formerly of Bronx, New York, passed away suddenly on January 1, 2015.

Born in Bronx, New York, Russell was the son of Rita Martina (Francis) Joyner and James Walter Joyner. Russ was a star athlete, who played football and basketball for Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx and then moved on to play football for the Boston College Eagles. Because of his work ethic and strong leadership skills, he was selected as team captain in his senior year. During his time at Boston College, Russ led his team to the 1982 Tangerine Bowl, the first bowl game for BC in 40 years. Upon graduation from Boston College, Russ played for two years in the NFL, for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Indianapolis Colts. After his time in the NFL, Russ embarked on a career within retail development and management industry. His projects included the development of Hollywood and Highland Center in Los Angeles, home to the world-renowned Kodak Theatre, and the transformation of Miracle Mile Shops/Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas to one of the most successful retail and entertainment centers in the country. At the time of his death, Russ was the Vice President and General Manager of Assembly Row in Somerville, Massachusetts, leading all operations and management facets of the $1.5B development.

He leaves his devoted wife of 24 years, Brenda Jewel Joyner, and his loving daughter, Martina Lee Joyner. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Hazel Lattimer, and his brothers, Michael Joyner, David Joyner, and Mark Joyner. In addition he leaves behind many loving family members, including his uncle, Kenneth Joyner; his aunts, Rose Francis and Rose Wilson; and his sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews, along with countless friends. Russ was pre-deceased by his mother, Rita Martina Joyner; his father, James Walter Joyner; and his brother, James William Joyner.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 8th from 2-9 p.m. at the McNulty Funeral Home, 3006 Middletown Road, Bronx, New York, www.mcnultyfuneralhome.com. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, 1634 Mahan Avenue, Bronx, at 11 a.m. on January 9th followed by burial at Mount Hope Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. Friends and family are invited to attend a final visitation at 10 a.m. on January 9th at the McNulty Funeral Home prior to the funeral Mass.

A memorial service will be held on the Boston College campus at St. Ignatius Church this Saturday, January 10, at noon, with a reception immediately following at the Cadigan Alumni Center.
